The Young Investigator Travel award was discussed. Three awardees
were recognized and checks distributed at the luncheon. The awardees
were Monica Montinari of MIT, Michael Kiefte of Dalhousi University,
and Subha Maruvada of Brigham and Women's Hospital. There was considerable
discussion about funding mechanisms for the award, including corporate
sponsors, sustaining members, and technical specialties. The award
will be coordinated by Lisa Zurk and Lily Wang for Nashville, and
by Lily Wang for Austin.
The WIA web site was discussed. David T. Bradley has been working
on updating the web site. No statistics were reported.
The Women in Acoustics Luncheon was discussed. Fees were increased
to $15 in advance/$20 at the door for Cancun, but revert to $10
in advance and $15 at the door for Nashville. The student rate remains
$5 at the door. The luncheon had 86 attendees with pre-paid tickets,
of which 72 signed it. Again, membership forms distributed by Kathy
Sawicki), a sign-in sheet (prepared by Elvira Viveiros) and recognition
of women officers and technical committee affiliations occurred.
The luncheon went smoothly thanks to ASA staffers.
At the June 5, 2002 Publication Policy meeting, it was agreed to
assemble the requested data the number of male and female first
authors submitting and accepted for publication in JASA between
July 1, 2001 to December 2002, and to report the results at Cancun.
The data had not been assembled, but will still to be done.
Peggy Nelson has agreed to take over the Chair of this committee
effective in Austin.
Uwe Hansen reported that there will be a hands-on session for high
school girls in Nashville, organized by the Education in Acoustics
Committee. He requested the support of WIA, which he received. Corrinne
Darvennes is expected to coordinate this.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy S. Timmerman, P.E.
