142ndMeeting of the ASA
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Tuesday, December 4, 2001

Present at the Women in Acoustics committee meeting were: Mardi Hastings, Lisa Zurk, Lily Wang, David T. Bradley, Peggy Nelson, Ellen Livingston, Donna Neff, Dana Hougland, Zoi-Heleni Michalopoulou, and Nancy Timmerman.

After introductions, the minutes of the Chicago meeting were approved. They had been previously distributed for comment.

The Women in Acoustics Luncheon was discussed. Donna Neff provided some statistics for consideration by those present. At Atlanta, there were 92 attendees at a cost of $2700 (about $30 each); at Columbus there were 104 at $2300 (about $22 each); and at Chicago there were 115 at $5100 (about $44 each). It was estimated that Pittsburgh would cost $36 each with about 100 attendees. It was decided to ask ASA for $2000 for each luncheon and to charge $15 for regular members and $5 for students, as was done here. It was also recommended to increase the charge to $20 for Cancun. The luncheon had 46 attendees with 70 tickets presold. It was determined that, if there could be two adjoining rooms with only the inner one by ticket access, there could be conversations occurring in the first room without disturbing the activities of any nearby sessions.

The Young Investigator Travel award was discussed. Awardees were recognized and checks distributed at the luncheon. It was noted that some applicants had received this award in the past. (We believe the first awards were at Atlanta). They have not been disqualified on this account. Peggy Nelson and Ellen Livingston will coordinate this award for the Pittsburgh meeting. For Cancun, it will be Lisa Zurk and Ellen Livingston.

The web site was discussed. Ellen Livingston noted that the statistics were updated two to three meetings ago, in 2000. In addition to current minutes, it was recommended that Ilene Busch-Vishniac be featured as the December, 2001 awardee of the Silver Medal. She was recognized at the luncheon for this as well. David T. Bradley said he would help Ellen with updates.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy S. Timmerman, P.E.
