145th Meeting of the ASA
Nashville, Tennessee
Tuesday, April 29, 2003

Present at the Women in Acoustics committee meeting were: Lily Wang, Melissa Epstein, Ellen Livingston, Martha Larson, Peggy Nelson, David T. Bradley, and Nancy Timmerman. After introductions, the minutes of the Cancun meeting were discussed. They were approved with corrections (spelling of Montanari). (Ellen moved and Lily seconded).

The Young Investigator Travel Award was discussed. Of five applicants, two papers were withdrawn and two awards given at the luncheon: Andone Lavery of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and Natasha Miles of Penn State. For Austin, Lily Wang and Melissa Epstein will coordinate. Melissa was also do the next meeting.

David T. Bradley discussed the WIA web site, which is being developed. A beta version was demonstrated, with an anticipated release date of June, 2003. Young Investigator awardees will be listed and archived. Contact information will not be linked, to reduce spam. A survey was provided at the luncheon. Data from it will be compiled by David and Martha Larson. Women fellows are also to be listed.

The Publications Policy Board reported on the results of a survey on gender bias. About 600 papers from 15 months in JASA were analyzed. Single sex authored papers had rejection rates of about 22%, mixed of 14%, and undetermined of 33%. Overall rejection rates were 24%. No gender bias was found, but the committee may revisit the subject in 5 years' time.

The luncheon was discussed. Peggy Nelson did a sign in sheet. Awardees and new fellows were recognized. It was uncertain whether there will be a luncheon in New York. There were 80 tickets sold for Wednesday. About 60 attended. Local and national staff who assisted in this effort are to be commended.

Corrinne Darvennes worked with Uwe Hansen on a hands-on session for high school girls Thursday at 10 am. Some additional assistants were obtained at the luncheon.

Ellen Livingston is serving on the Public Relations Committee. Reports are available on the AIP website. Nancy Timmerman is serving on Medals and Awards. Peggy Nelson will assume the Chair of WIA in Austin.

The Tuesday meeting adjourned at 6:18 pm.
