TUTORIAL LECTURE

A two-hour Tutorial titled "An Evening with the Art and Science of Music: The Families of Musical Instruments: Physics and Performance" will be presented by Uwe J. Hansen, Department of Physics, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN and James M. Pyne, School of Music, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, 1 November. The presentation will include performances by The Ohio State University String Quintet, Paul Robinson, Coordinator; The Ohio State University Woodwind Quintet, Katherine Borst Jones, Coordinator, The Ohio State University Brass Ensemble, James Akins, Coordinator; special Keyboard Demonstrations, Stephen Glaser, Piano; special Percussion Demonstrations, Michael Bump, Percussion; and The Ohio State University Chamber Orchestra, Marshall Haddock, Conductor.

This is the twenty-seventh in a series of Tutorial Lectures intended to provide attendees with some understanding and appreciation of areas of acoustical research other than their own specialties. A registration fee is charged to defray partially the lecture expenses; $15 if paid in advance by check, money order, or MasterCard, Visa or American Express credit card received no later than 20 September by the Acoustical Society of America, Tutorial Session Registration, Suite 1NO1, 2 Huntington Quadrangle, Melville, NY 11747-4502; or $25 if paid after 20 September or at the meeting.

DISTINGUISHED LECTURES

A Distinguished Lecture on "Smart Structures and Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS)" will be presented by B. T. Khuri-Yakub of Stanford University at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, 4 November, in the Regency South Ballroom. Malcolm Crocker of Auburn University will present another Distinguished Lecture, "Distinguished Lecture on Acoustics at the End of the 20th Century--An Overview of the State of the Art," at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, on 4 November, in the Hayes Room.

SPECIAL HISTORY LECTURES

The Committee on Archives and History will jointly sponsor two special lectures on the history of acoustics. "History of Musical Acoustics," jointly sponsored by the Technical Committee on Musical Acoustics, will be presented by Gabriel Weinreich at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 2 November in the Hayes Room. "History of Physical Acoustics," jointly sponsored by the Technical Committee on Physical Acoustics, will be presented by Robert Beyer and David Blackstock at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, 4 November, in the McKinley Room. GALLERY OF ACOUSTICS

The Interdisciplinary Technical Group on Signal Processing in Acoustics will sponsor its fourth Gallery of Acoustics at the Columbus meeting. The Gallery will be on display from Monday to Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Union D and on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Delaware A. The objective of the Gallery is to enhance ASA meetings by providing a compact and free-format setting for researchers to display their work to all meeting attendees in a forum emphasizing the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of acoustics. The Gallery of Acoustics provides a means by which we can all share and appreciate the natural beauty and aesthetic appeal of acoustical phenomena. The Columbus Gallery will be the first time that audio entries are included. The Gallery will consist of posters, videos, and audio clips of images and/or sounds generated by acoustic processes or resulting from signal processing of acoustic data. Images and videos can consist of actual visualizations of acoustic processes, or of aesthetically and technically interesting images resulting from various signal processing techniques. Audio clips and segments should also have both aesthetic and technical appeal.

A panel of referees will judge entries on the basis of aesthetic/artistic appeal, ability to convey and exchange information, and originality. A cash prize of $350 will be awarded to the winning entry. The top three entries will, with the authors' permission and cooperation, be posted on the Gallery web site.

EXHIBIT

An equipment exhibition will open on Monday, 1 November, at 5:30 p.m. in the Delaware Room. Exhibit hours are: Monday, 1 November, 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, 2 November, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; and Wednesday, 3 November, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The poster sessions in Speech Communication on Tuesday, and in Engineering Acoustics and Psychological and Physiological Acoustics on Wednesday will be in the exhibit hall. The exhibition will include computer-based instrumentation, sound-level meters, sound intensity systems, signal processing systems, devices for noise and vibration control, and acoustical materials.

EXHIBIT OPENING RECEPTION

A complimentary social and hosted bar will be held in the Delaware Room from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Monday, 1 November, in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition. Registration badges are required for entry. One free drink ticket will be provided for each registrant. This event will provide opportunities to view the exhibits and to socialize with friends and colleagues

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS

TUTORIAL WORKSHOP ON OCEANOGRAPHY

At the Columbus meeting, the "Oceanography Workshop/ Mini-Tutorial" series will be inaugurated with two one-hour lectures on internal waves by Robert Pinkel of Scripps Inst. of Oceanography, San Diego, CA, and Lev Ostrovsky of NOAA ETL, Boulder, CO. Dr. Pinkel will talk about the deep water internal wave field and Dr. Ostrovsky will discuss the shallow water internal wave field, with emphasis on the important nonlinear wave field. Both lecturers are leading experts in these fields, and should provide attendees with the "eagle's eye view" of current knowledge and research in this topic, which is an important one for both pure oceanographers and ocean acousticians. A discussion session will follow the talks. This workshop, sponsored by the Acoustical Oceanography Technical Committee, will be held in the Fairfield Room beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, 3 November.

SPECIAL CONCERTS

CONCERT PERFORMANCE BY THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND

A performance technical session featuring The Ohio State University Marching Band in concert will be held on Thursday from 4:25 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Regency Ballroom. The OSU Marching Band, "The Pride of the Buckeyes," directed by Dr. Jon Woods, is one of the few college all-brass and percussion bands in the country, commonly acknowledged as the largest of its type in the world. The performance will include concert pieces as well as several of Ohio State's school songs. Known to most as the "best damn band in the land," the OSU Marching Band has gained, and continues to enjoy, national and international acclaim, having been honored with the Sudler Trophy as the outstanding college band in the country and saluted by USA Today in a multi-page article highlighting the band's many fine traditions and innovations.
