SPECIAL LECTURES

HOT TOPICS SESSION

On Thursday afternoon, 1 June, a Hot Topics session will be held starting at 1:25 p.m. and ending just before the start of the Plenary Session. Papers will be presented on current topics in the fields of engineering acoustics, underwater acoustics and psychological and physiological acoustics.

SPECIAL HISTORY LECTURES

The Committee on Archives and History will jointly sponsor two special lectures on the history of acoustics. "History of Engineering Acoustics," jointly sponsored by the Technical Committee on Engineering Acoustics, will be presented by Stanley L. Ehrlich at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 31 May, in the Canadian Room. "History of Architectural Acoustics," jointly sponsored by the Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics, will be presented by Ewart Wetherill at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, 2 June, in Tower 1206.

In 1997, the ASA Committee on Archives and History conceived a plan for a series of invited lectures on each of the technical areas of the Society which would memorialize the significant achievements and milestones of each of its twelve technical committees and one interdisciplinary technical group during the first three quarters of the Society's first century.

With the cooperation of the technical committees, distinguished individuals are selected to review the history of their particular technical specialty and present a lecture which shows how that activity has developed and has contributed to the Society at large and to the broad field of acoustics as well. At the 138th meeting in Columbus, Ohio, the first two History Lectures were presented: Gabriel Weinreich on Musical Acoustics and Robert Beyer and David Blackstock on Physical Acoustics. At each subsequent meeting two additional lectures will be scheduled including those in Architectural Acoustics and Engineering Acoustics at this meeting in Atlanta.

The invited lecturers have been asked to prepare a written manuscript of their lectures which will be published in a commemorative book for the 75th Anniversary of the Society to be celebrated in 2004. The Archives and History Committee and the individual technical committees/group welcome comments and suggestions on both the History Lecture Series and on the proposed ASA Diamond Anniversary Book. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS

TUTORIAL WORKSHOP ON OCEANOGRAPHY

At the Atlanta meeting, the "Oceanography Workshop/ Mini-Tutorial" series will continue, featuring two lectures on bottom sediment formation, stratigraphy, and their acoustic measurements. The lecturers will be Dr. Louis Bartek of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Dr. Peter Traykovski of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA. These mini-tutorial lectures, which were well received in their debut at the Columbus meeting, will again stress overviews of the oceanographic science, and how acoustics is used as a vital tool in doing that science. As we are still experimenting with formats, the lectures will be presented this time as part of a joint AO/UW special session. Specifically, each of the one-hour lectures, will be the lead off talks in the special sessions 1aAO and 1pAO titled "Acoustic surveys of ocean bottom geology I and II." The tutorial talks should mesh nicely with these sessions, which will be of great interest to those concerned with ocean bottom geology. The presentation Dr. Bartek will be given at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 30 May, in the English Room and the presentation by Dr. Traykovski will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 May, in the English Room.
